🏏 Kevin Pieterson strikes 149 at Headingley πŸŸ

2nd test, cricket, England v South Africa

MATCH REPORT

The Second Test between England and South Africa at Headingley ended yesterday in a draw. The fact that England were in a position to mount a challenge on the final day of this rain affected second test match owed everything to an outstanding performance from England’s premier South African-born batsman, Kevin Pieterson. His 149 came at a crucial time for a team that had been trounced in the first test and who were looking down the barrel in their first innings reply to South Africa’s 419. He took apart the bowling with an arrogance and skill that put him in the same league as David Gower, Viv Richards and Javed Miandad. This was not slogging, (ala Ian Botham 149 not out v Australia, 1981)  but a controlled demolition of an oppostion line-up that many observers regard as the best seam attack in the world.

There was audacity here, as well as well incredible grace.

You could not guess what he would do next.

No one can teach you that in a coaching manual.

It’s what you call raw talent.

That England go into the third test with a chance of squaring the series owes it all to Kevin Pieterson striking 149 at Headingley.

Gore Vidal is dead

Gore Vidal, Politics πŸ’Ό πŸ—³ πŸͺ–, USA πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

Gore Vidal, theΒ brilliant writerΒ famed for hisΒ acerbic witΒ andΒ often sharpΒ political views,Β has died at theΒ age ofΒ 86. He died at his home in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening, his family has confirmed. The cause of his death is believed to be complications from pneumonia.

Gore Vidal wrote 25 novels – Β including the best-selling Burr and Myra Breckenridge.

He also wroteΒ more than 200 essays and several plays.

He ran for political office twice.

His circle of friendsΒ included Tennessee Williams, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra. He was also closely linked to the Kennedy family, becoming a confidant of Jackie Kennedy, who was his stepsister. Vidal ran for a seat in Congress in 1960 and again in 1982, but lost both times.

He was deeply critical of George Bush’s administration and in 2008 said of the 2003 war on Iraq:

β€˜You can see little Bush all along was just dreaming of war, and also Cheney dreaming about oil wells and how you knock apart a country like Iraq and of course their oil will pay for the damage you do. For that alone, he should have been put in front of a firing squad… They – Cheney, Bush – they wanted the war. They’re oilmen. They want a war to get more oil. They’re also extraordinarily stupid. These people don’t know anything about anything.’

So, are the Olympics are a good deal for Great Britain?

Olympics 2012

ANALYSIS

David Cameron says the Olympics will net Great Britain Β£13 billion.

The history of the games suggests otherwise.

And with the gloomy news that the UK recession is deeper following a worse than expected drop inΒ economic growth, the games which start on Friday areΒ already beginning to look like an expensive white elephant.

Already, the government’s budget has rocketed from to Β£2.4Β billion to Β£9.3 bn andΒ still counting.

And problems with the private security firm G4SΒ that wonΒ a Β£284 millionΒ contract to protect the gameΒ will of courseΒ result in even more cost to the public purse as 1,200 extra troopsΒ are drafted in to do the job.

Generally though, the people who do best from the games are those who win the contracts, the Olympic bureaucracy which gets billions from broadcasters and of course the sponsors.

As for the rest, well the trickle down effect has meant the construction of the Olympic Park, the Velodrome – grand projects which will struggle to be useful once the roar of the Olympic crowd is long past.

Of course, east London needed regenerating, but tax payers money could have been much better spent than onΒ a short-termΒ resurrection of an ancient RomanΒ custom.

When one thinks of the Olympics, one is of course reminded of Greece, a country that could not afford to host games but because ofΒ its own pretensions to the past went ahead with the project anyway.

At the time, no one of course really knew the depth ofΒ Greece’s economic problems.

And listening to George Osborne today, when he spoke of deep-rooted problems in the British economy, one fears that history may be about to repeat itself.

Ist Test at Oval: England slide to innings defeat

MATCH REPORT

The First Test at the Oval was billed as the contest between the best two teams in the world. Pakistan, who whitewashed England during the winter, may have had something to say about that. But they are not the team facing England this summer, South Africa are and they comprehensively beat their opponents here.

England posted a competitive score in their first innings of 385, which was perhaps a hundred or so below par on what appeared to be a friendly enough pitch.

But South Africa’s batting response laid bare England’s bowling and in the process completely knocked the stuffing out of the batting line up for the second innings.

Hashim Amla is a wristy player who is pleasant to watch – the way he was playing England’s bowling he looked like super man.

In the end he finished with the highest score ever made by a South African, 311 not out.  He was ably supported by a Jacques Kallis’ 182 not out and a century from the likeable South African Captain Graeme Smith.

Then it was left to Dale Steyn – the great fast bowler – to take five wickets and Imran Tahir  to wrap the game up for the tourists.

England cracked when it became clear that they were not going to get past Amla and Kallis.

The game became a formality after.

World champions don’t fold like that.

This could be a long hot summer.

South Africa beat England by innings and 12 runs

When calling someone a Black C**t is not Racist Abuse πŸ₯… πŸŸ

Anton Ferdinand, football, John Terry

ANALYSIS

For a short while, it appeared that the world of football was cleaning-up its act.

Gone were the days when players who were not white could expect a barracking from fans and players alike.

You know it wasn’t that long ago when bananas were thrown on the field when a player who was not white was present.

Today’s Magistrates Court ruling has turned back the clock.

John Terry swears that he is not a racist, and there was no evidence presented in the case to show that he was lying about that.

However, the words he used during that volatile exchange were, and for some reason Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle concluded that it was ‘highly unlikely’  that the Chelsea and England defender had abused Anton Ferdinand in the way he was accused of.

Apparently, the prosecution evidence had not been strong enough.

Of course, the Football Association is to make its own ruling, where it is said the burden of proof is lower, as their’s will be a civil ruling, it will be down to the balance of probabilities.

So, that’s alright then.

This is not the first time, English courts have made decisions that are at best wholly unsatisfactory.

Remember, the case involving Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, who were cleared by an all-white jury of an attack on an Asian teenager.

In that case, the possible racial element to this attack was not even a factor.

Intent, it is said, is difficult to prove.

When a player is caught on camera calling his colleague a Black C**t, is that really the case?
