ANALYSIS With the Syrian army backed by Russian airpower and HEZBOLLAH fighters winning, the rebels are now refusing to attend the latest round of talks which will take place in Geneva tomorrow. ASSAD’S army has regained ground around northern Aleppo and that bordering Turkey. In response the rebels carry out terror attacks in LATAKIA, Damascus and elsewhere. America angered by Russia’s entry into the conflict has increased its presence with the new use of the RMEILAN airstrip in the ‘Kurdish’ north of Syria and still undeclared boots on the ground – moves aimed at bolstering ‘moderate’ rebels who are still a divided bunch of fanatics, thrill seekers and cold blooded murderers. What kind of Syria would emerge should this rag tag bunch get their way can be seen in ‘liberated’ Libya where Western powers – including Russia – are making a show of support for the weak, ineffective and corrupt ‘regime’ in Tripoli. Libya once a stable North African nation is now an  ungovernable violence ridden rump of at least four entities. But Washington continues to drag the conflict on in Syria with little hope of achieving anything other than that goal. This myopic policy which hasn’t taken into account other emerging realities – a resurgent and militant Kurdish movement, waves of refugees flooding Europe as well as the potency of DAESH in Raqqa and al Nusra in Idlib – isn’t helping anyone and is only prolonging the suffering of the Syrian people.
