ANALYSIS – ISIS fighters are currently engaged in wars in Tikrit and Kobane against Iraqi forces backed by Militias and Kurds who are championed by the West. The fighting has been fierce – in Tikrit Iraqi forces are still not in control after three weeks, whilst a four-month campaign in Kobane is still inconclusive. All this comes on top of an ongoing US-led bombing campaign targeting key installations, bases and command centres. It’s been easy to ignore and perhaps forget the obvious here that many human beings have perished for very little ‘progress’ – it’s been easy because ISIS have been portrayed as evil incarnate over here and in those allied to the war against them. Yet they are human beings. When this website posted an ISIS response to early claims being made by the Iraqi army in Tikrit it was quickly removed – this wasn’t a ‘burning’ video or a mass ‘beheading’, it was simply fighters clearly sincere in their beliefs showing defiance whilst appealing the Islamic world for help. The video was in Arabic and there were no codes designed to ‘entrap’ youngsters to Jihad. Instead, you got to see ordinary men behind the balaclavas and guess what they were no different to you and me. Surely, understanding your enemy is the best approach to ending this bloody and unnecessary conflict that, if the US is to be believed could still drag on for many years.
