Gunter Grass, a poem and a ban from Israel

Günter Grass: ‘What Must Be Said’

Why have I kept silent, held back so long,

on something openly practiced in

war games, at the end of which those of us

who survive will at best be footnotes?

It’s the alleged right to a first strike

that could destroy an Iranian people

subjugated by a loudmouth

and gathered in organized rallies,

because an atom bomb may be being

developed within his arc of power.

Yet why do I hesitate to name

that other land in which

for years – although kept secret –

a growing nuclear power has existed

beyond supervision or verification,

subject to no inspection of any kind?

This general silence on the facts,

before which my own silence has bowed,

seems to me a troubling lie, and compels

me toward a likely punishment

the moment it’s flouted:

the verdict “Anti-semitism” falls easily.

But now that my own country,

brought in time after time

for questioning about its own crimes,

profound and beyond compare,

has delivered yet another submarine to Israel,

(in what is purely a business transaction,

though glibly declared an act of reparation)

whose speciality consists in its ability

to direct nuclear warheads toward

an area in which not a single atom bomb

has yet been proved to exist, its feared

existence proof enough, I’ll say what must be said.

But why have I kept silent till now?

Because I thought my own origins,

Tarnished by a stain that can never be removed,

meant I could not expect Israel, a land

to which I am, and always will be, attached,

to accept this open declaration of the truth.

Why only now, grown old,

and with what ink remains, do I say:

Israel’s atomic power endangers

an already fragile world peace?

Because what must be said

may be too late tomorrow;

and because—burdend enough as Germans—

we may be providing material for a crime

that is foreseeable, so that our complicity

wil not be expunged by any

of the usual excuses.

And granted: I’ve broken my silence

because I’m sick of the West’s hypocrisy;

and I hope too that many may be freed

from their silence, may demand

that those responsible for the open danger

we face renounce the use of force,

may insist that the governments of

both Iran and Israel allow an international authority

free and open inspection of

the nuclear potential and capability of both.

No other course offers help

to Israelis and Palestinians alike,

to all those living side by side in emnity

in this region occupied by illusions,

and ultimately, to all of us.

—Günter Grass

⚽️ Mario Balotelli

No Regrets..

Jose Mourinho said he was a player that could not be coached.

So, with Manchester City eight points adrift of their fierce rivals, and with that kamikaze striker Mario Balotelli facing the prospect of a nine-match ban some are asking what Roberto Mancini was thinking in hiring the mercurial Italian in the first place.

Well, Balotelli is a wayward talent, who let down his side in the last minutes of that crucial match with Arsenal on Sunday with a completely unnessary foul.

Earlier in the season, with City cruising at the top, his antics could be tolerated even raising a chuckle or two, for the game of football needs characters and this exceptionally talented player is certainly that.

Events of the last month have however changed the landscape, and even the usually calm Mancini is buckling under the pressure.

City are by no means finished, if we have learned anything about the League this year is that being top doesn’t stop you from being beaten by anyone, and Manchester United are by no means invincible.

Some are predicting a mass clear out at the need of the season, starting with the eviction of Mancini as coach.

Well that would be a mistake, City will have learned from this, and they will come back next season a much tougher team – mentally.

No doubt some players will leave, to let go Balotelli however would be a mistake for he has all the makings of a future Eric Cantona.

At the moment, he needs a firm hand perhaps from the owner for Balotelli is a wayward talent, who could like Cantona earn himself a reputation of being a flawed genius.

That is not going happen though, if no one is prepared to put up with him.

To Understand China look to the Past 🇨🇳

ANALYSIS – If there was any nation for whom the word ‘history’ means anything, that nation is China.

For this rising superpower has had a long life, stretching back some two thousand years.

So, perhaps the best way to read how China will develop in the world will come through looking back to the past.

Two incidents stand out in relation to recent moves by the US into Australia.

The first involved the rising power of Japan, who found itself under an embargo targeting the raw materials which it needed to continue its move into the industrialised age.

The established wisdom is that the Second World War in the Pacific started with the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour, however didn’t that war really begin with those US sanctions that struck at the heart of nation?

So how do you think China, could interpret America’s recent move into Australia, allied to her talk of supporting South Korea, Japan, and Australia, all of whom are said to be concerned about the rise of this future superpower?

Could the move into Australia, be seen as the opening of hostilities by a status-quo power?

Today, China is a huge nation, a continent of some two billion or more people.  It was a huge nation also when Great Britain forced it through gun-boat diplomacy to allow the selling of opium on its mainland before eventually ceding control of Hong Kong.

Could there be a repeat result over trade in the South China Sea, which the US and her allies claim is an  international trade route?

All this of course, negates one stark fact, any future conflict with China will mean any potential foe would have to deal with her arsenal of nuclear weapons.

So, it appears that a number of nations will have to get around the negotiating table to iron out their differences with China.

🪖 China and its military power 🇨🇳

05 Thursday Apr 2012

China and US, China 🇨🇳, Nayab Chohan, NayabChohan, NayabChohanLIVE, Politics 💼 🗳 🪖, Taiwan, Template Radio, USA 🇺🇸

 It’s all there for show…

Any conflict between America and China would of course be over Taiwan, but how realistic is such a confrontation.

If the Economist is to be believed America’s actions by moving troops into Australia, is an admission that Washington had been distracted by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq to such an extent that it had forgotten the rise of China.

If that is indeed the case, what hostile actions has China taken to alarm the world’s last superpower?

China is the second biggest military spender in the world today, which currently stands at 89.8 billion dollars, a fraction of what America spends – 739.3bn dollars.

Further, the combined budgets of Britain, France and Germany, who are all contributors to Nato, almost double China’s.

In addition to all this, the US and Nato have at least a decade of combat experience through wars in Kosovo, Iraq, Afghanistan and of course Libya.

The People’s Liberation army of China is indeed the largest army in the world, however, the last time it was involved in a theatre of war was in 1979 against Vietnam, where it was crushed.

And the Korean War was a complete disaster.

So, if anyone is going to be provoking a war, it certainly won’t be China.

American Marines land in Australia

04 Wednesday Apr 2012

Tags

US and Australia, US and China

How should the arrival of US marines in the Australian northern territories be interpreted by China?

Well, two hundred arrived in Darwin today, with the number to be bolstered to 2, 500.

This presence will mean that the US will be better prepared for any engagement in the South China Sea, which is a major commercial shipping route and which has also been the focus of dispute with China, who regards this as her own territorial waters.

America also has marines stationed in Central Asia, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Trouble is no one seems to be asking why it is doing all this.

France and debt, France and elections, Francois Hollande, Nicolas Sarkozy

With Mitt Romney now emerging as the Republican party’s man to take on Barack Obama in America’s Presidential elections, how are we to read and understand what is going on France, where the first round for who will be President will take place on April 22, with the decider in May.

France is in trouble – it has been in this state since 1974, and the current candidates for the top job do not show any indication that they know how they will tackle public debt which currently stands at 90 percent of GDP, with public spending currently standing at 56 per cent of GDP.

Both front-runners, the Socialist Francois Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy say they will tax the rich 75 per cent, something this is hardly going to encourage entrepreneurship or just as importantly create any confidence in the bond markets, where one ratings agency has already downgraded France’s AAA status.

So, how will the new President, assuming that it will be Hollande, the polls certainly think so, approach France’s new debt burden – denial is not an option, nor is playing the anti-immigration card anymore.

A period of austerity with cuts to public spending, will need to be backed with a more flexible tax plan, at a time when France’s old enemy across the channel has just cut the top rate to 45 per cent, where does the future President think the rich will leave their country for?

None of this will be welcomed politically, which is why it is important that the cuts are managed at a slower pace than they are over here, otherwise France will find that it will bequeathing a future generation with far less than it currently enjoys.
