REPORT – Seven children – aged 9 to 14 – say fourteen French peacekeepers raped them in return for food at a refugee camp. The allegations were leaked by a now suspended UN aid worker.

TIKRIT, Iraq – Some 27,000 Iraqi soldiers backed by militia are attempting to retake Saddam Hussein’s hometown from the grip of ISIS. There have been reports of fierce fighting with progress being hampered by the presence of roadside bombs. Press TV reports an Iranian general is overseeing operations.

UKRAINE, East – UN human rights office based in Geneva says deaths both civilian and military have risen as a result of fighting in Donetsk Airport and Debaltseve. It also said there was credible reports of a flow of weapons and fighters coming from Russia into eastern Ukraine since December. There had been a ‘merciless devastation of civilian lives and infrastructure’, the UN office said.

UKRAINE, East – Rebels say Ukrainian soldiers still control a supply road. Nine soldiers and seven civilians have died during fighting for the town which holds a key railway link and neighbouring Avdiivka since Sunday. Kiev says twenty six soldiers have also been injured. Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko told Parliament the rebels had also attacked Kramatorsk, 30 miles from front line. Meanwhile, Ukraine says it has made gains north east Mariupol in several villages close to the border to Russia.

BELARUS, Minsk – Rebel leaders of self proclaimed independent Donetsk and Luhansk are not present for today’s peace talks. The rebels have continued their offensive in eastern Ukraine targeting key strategic towns of Debaltseve and Vuhleshirsk. Water and electricity have been cut off with rebels surrounding government soldiers in the towns. 15 civilians have been reported killed in Donetsk, with Kiev losing 12 soldiers during fighting in the last 24 hours. Rebels say they have lost 13.

The US and Israel had contacted the President of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan and he had assured them that he would not be backing the UN resolution.
US Secretary of State John Kerry had also contacted several senior members of the Nigerian government.
The Jordanian backed initiative had expected to gain the nine votes needed for the resolution to be passed, before being vetoed by the US later.
It is now clear that the Palestinians had wrongly thought Nigeria which is a rotating member of the security council would vote in favour.
Nigeria whose president recently visited Jerusalem on a pilgrimage is seen as an ally of Israel on the security council.

1.3 million Muslims live in camps in Rakhine state in what observers describe as ‘apartheid-like’ conditions. Myanmar who moved from military rule to democracy to 2011 doesn’t recognize the Rohingya people as its citizens and wants to class them as ‘Bengalis.’ Attacks by Buddhist mobs led to the death of 280 and the displacement of 140, 000. They are currently trapped in camps and are unable to leave to neighbouring Bangladesh because the government there won’t take them.

Announcement follows the release of American Alan Gross who has spent five years in a Cuban prison.
Obama will announce from the White House at 12 (5pm GMT) that the US will open an embassy in Havana and that he will ask Congress to lift the long-standing embargo on Cuba.
Gross had been sentenced to 15 years whilst working for USAid which Cuba considers to be an illegal organisation that aims to undermine the Communist government.
