LONDON – An appeal court has reduced Sgt Alexander Blackman’s murder conviction for shooting an injured Taliban fighter in Afghanistan. Marine A, as he was referred to in court, was suffering from mental illness at the time of the shooting in September 2011, the court was told.

ISLAMABAD -Pakistan’s military says it’s killed dozens of militants in a security crackdown following the attack at a Sufi shrine yesterday that killed 80 worshippers at Sindh. Pakistan’s military is quoted as saying 100 militants have killed in operations across the country. Pakistan has also summoned the Afghan officials to Rawalpindi and presented them with a list of 76 ‘terrorists’ harbouring on Afghan soil. The attack at the Sufi shrine is the latest in a string of incidents across Pakistan this month.

KUNDUZ – Afghan officials say they are fighting to clear the area of pockets of Taliban fighters who entered the city on Monday. Civilians reported to be fleeing the city. Afghan officials had said they had reclaimed KUNDUZ on Monday.

KUNDUZ – The governor of KUNDUZ says the battle is over and that hundreds of Taliban soldiers have been killed, although there’s no independent verification of this claim. He said a clear up operation was now underway. Taliban fighters launched a four pronged attack on KUNDUZ  late Sunday and they managed to place it’s white flag in the centre of the city. The militants never claimed to have secured the city.

KABUL – This is the second time the Taliban have attempted to seize control of KUNDUZ province. On the first occasion, in September 2015, the US backed government regained control within days. The Taliban have also seized the strategically important district Nad Ali in Lashar Gah Helmand province.
