ANALYSIS – Hamas offered the Israelis terms for a ceasefireΒ – an end to the blockade of Gaza,Β and no more assaults from its neighbour – they were not unreasonable but Benjamin Netanyahu ignored this preferring instead a deal brokered by the military regime of Egypt which he knew would never be accepted by the Palestinians as well as Hamas who the Israeli war machine will never defeat.
Likud who are the ruling government in Israel are extremists in a political system dominated by ever more extreme views, something that has sadly filtered down to everyday level. Today it is rare to hear voices from the Peace Now activists who have demonstrated against this attack on the Palestinians as they have for every assault since Sabra and Shatila. For Israeli society is dominated by views amplified by Netanyahu and were he ever to stray from the hymn sheet he would be replaced by someone ever more ridiculous,Β ever more belligerent as well as ever more deadly.Β Hamas believes that everything should be open for discussion were the Israelis to meet them seriously around the table for a long term peace initiative, that includes Israel’s right to exist.Β Instead of understanding this or wanting to understand this, the Israeli leadership have dubbed this their right to fight for their life, their war for independence that began in 1948 and their high tech army has continued on its murderous path to this day. They know that their ally, the US will not lift a finger to change their approach,Β for like the Israeli PMs the American Presidents know they must speak from the same hymn sheet when it comes to the Zionist state and its murderous dealings with the unfortunate people called the Palestinians.
If this is indeed Israel’s war for independence,Β then the Palestinians who are clearly the people under attack from colonists are fighting a war for independence like that the Algerians fought against the French.
That conflict ended after 150 years with the resistance smashed but the French knowing that politically their position was untenable.
And unfortunately,Β Israel’s myopic and reactionary political leadership are leading the people they claim to be protecting to same fate as the French.

ANALYSISΒ – Germany’s victory over Argentina yesterday came on the back of a 7-1 thrashing of Brazil, and have led to predictions that the future will be dominated by Joachim Low’s well organised and very young side.Β Of course, it could well have been different had Argentina taken their chances like Algeria during the last 16, or had the much fancied French done the same in the quarter finals. The same could also be said for the beaten finalists who scraped through their qualifying games with victories over Bosnia and Iran.
The World Cup in Brazil was a great spectacle for a number of reasons – great goals of which Mario Gotze’s was arguably the best because it won his nation the cup just as it seemed penalties were inevitable, breath taking moments like Cristiano Ronaldo’s loft in the dying seconds of the match against the USA which kept Portugal in the competition, as well as a fanastically competitive spirit that was kept alive through out the tournament and which was epitomised by Tim Cahill’s stunning volley for Australia an immediate response to Aryen Robben putting Holland in the lead.
But surely the biggest revelation of this world cup was how close the nations from Africa and America ( not forgetting Costa Rica and the USA) came to beating the sides that made it into the final, as well as other games like Costa Rica’s defeats of Italy and Uruguay and the USA’s draw with Portugal which was seconds away from being a well fought win. These sides as well as the likes of Iran, Bosnia, Algeria and Australia showed that they did not fear their more rated opponents and had they had a star player or two could well have won this competition. What they lacked is confidence something they will have gained from the last month. So expect a stronger challenge from these nations in Russia 2018.
