When calling someone a Black C**t is not Racist Abuse 🥅 🏟

Anton Ferdinand, football, John Terry

ANALYSIS

For a short while, it appeared that the world of football was cleaning-up its act.

Gone were the days when players who were not white could expect a barracking from fans and players alike.

You know it wasn’t that long ago when bananas were thrown on the field when a player who was not white was present.

Today’s Magistrates Court ruling has turned back the clock.

John Terry swears that he is not a racist, and there was no evidence presented in the case to show that he was lying about that.

However, the words he used during that volatile exchange were, and for some reason Chief Magistrate Howard Riddle concluded that it was ‘highly unlikely’  that the Chelsea and England defender had abused Anton Ferdinand in the way he was accused of.

Apparently, the prosecution evidence had not been strong enough.

Of course, the Football Association is to make its own ruling, where it is said the burden of proof is lower, as their’s will be a civil ruling, it will be down to the balance of probabilities.

So, that’s alright then.

This is not the first time, English courts have made decisions that are at best wholly unsatisfactory.

Remember, the case involving Lee Bowyer and Jonathan Woodgate, who were cleared by an all-white jury of an attack on an Asian teenager.

In that case, the possible racial element to this attack was not even a factor.

Intent, it is said, is difficult to prove.

When a player is caught on camera calling his colleague a Black C**t, is that really the case?

A Hamas member was killed and another fighter wounded during an air strike on Gaza City. And hours earlier, three more people were hurt when a tank shell hit their vehicle near the city. On this occasion, the Israeli army said it was targeting “a Hamas terrorist squad” in the vehicle.

An Egypt-brokered ceasefire had been formally announced last month.

This round of violence in Gaza flared up last month after a cross-border attack from Sinai which left an Israeli civilian dead. In six days of violence which began on June 18, Israel killed 15 Palestinians and injured dozens more, while Palestinian fighters fired more than 150 rockets at Israel, injuring five.

Tommy Connors Snr, 52, his son Patrick Connors, 20, and daughter Josie, 31, and Josie’s husband James John Connors, 34, had kept the men in squalid conditions at Greenacres in Bedfordshire.

The victims were made to work for nothing and slept in sheds and horseboxes at the Greenacres caravan site near Leighton Buzzard. They were exploited, verbally abused and beaten for financial gain, Luton Crown Court heard.

The victims had been forced to work in the Connors’ block paving business.

They were given next to no food, forced to wash in cold water and paid little or no money for working up to 19 hours a day, six days a week.

Tommy Sr and his son Patrick were found guilty of actual bodily harm and a charge each of servitude and forced labour.

Josie and her husband James John were convicted of two counts each of servitude and forced labour, with James John also guilty of actual bodily harm.

All four have been remanded in custody until Thursday.

No decision has been reached on Tommy Snr’s sons Johnny, 28, James, 24, and Tommy Jnr, 27.

US Trade Deficit ‘falls in May’

11 Wednesday Jul 2012

US Economy, US Trade Deficit

The US Trade Deficit – the difference between imports and exports – fell 3.8% to $48.7bn (£31.3bn) in May.

The figure had stood at  $50.6bn in April.

This was due to a fall in oil price and a rise in exports to China and Europe.

According to the Commerce Department, imports fell 0.7% to $231.8bn, whilst exports rose 0.2% to $183.1bn, helped by heavy machinery and telecoms equipment sales.

The trade deficit with China increased to $26bn –  up from $24.5bn the month before. Exports to China rose 5.2%, but imports rose by a faster 5.8%.

Exports to the European Union were up 2.6% in May.

Congo Warlord who used Child Soldiers gets 14 years

Thomas Lubanga has been sentenced to 14 years in jail for recruiting and using child soldiers in his rebel army in 2002 and 2003.

Taking into account time spent in custody, this will mean the warlord from Congo will now serve a further eight years.

Lubanga would go to people’s homes and ask them to donate something for the war effort, the court heard. He would ask for cash, a cow, or for a child to fight for his rebel army. The court was shown video footage of Lubanga at a training camp, where children as young as 10 were being prepared for battle.

Another video showed young children working as bodyguards.

Lubanga became the first person to be convicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) since it was set up 10 years ago.

The conflict between ethnic groups in Ituri, north-eastern DR Congo, is estimated to have killed 60,000 people.

The Lubanga case is closely related to the current fighting in DR Congo, where forces loyal to Gen Bosco Ntaganda are threatening the main eastern city of Goma.Gen Ntaganda has been accused of the same crimes as Lubanga and his M23 group resumed its rebellion shortly after Lubanga was convicted.

Lubanga was arrested in March 2005 by UN peacekeepers, along with other militiamen.

Although, he showed no emotion as he was sentenced, Lubanga cried when he was transferred to The Hague in March 2006.

Jewel Uddin, 26, Omar Mohammed Khan, 27, and Mohammed Hasseen, 23, all from Sparkhill, were arrested during raids last week after police stopped a car on the M1 and found guns, knives, machetes and a home-made explosive device.

They appeared at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on terror charges, where they were accused of targeting the English Defence League, who had held a rally in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, earlier that day.

The case has been sent to the Old Bailey for a hearing on 31 July.

Mr Uddin, Mr Khan and Mr Hasseen are charged under the Terrorism Act 2006, accused of preparing for an act or acts of terrorism with the intention of committing such acts. They are accused of manufacturing an improvised explosive device, as well as acquiring firearms and other weapons, and vehicles connected with their alleged plans.

The men were arrested by the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, following a routine police stop of a vehicle on the M1 near Sheffield, South Yorkshire, on 30 June.

Four other men detained in connection with the investigation remain in custody.

They are a 22-year-old man from Smethwick, West Midlands; a 22-year-old man from Alum Rock, Birmingham; a 24-year-old man from Moseley, Birmingham; and a man aged 43 from Kirklees, West Yorkshire.

Police have been given until Wednesday to charge, release or apply for a warrant of further detention for three of them. The fourth man can be held until Thursday.

South Sudan’s First Year of Independence

09 Monday Jul 2012

Tags

Juba, Omar Bashir, South Sudan, Sudan

TEMPLATE ANALYSIS

Despite a year marked by ethnic conflict in Jonglei State that has resulted in the killing of hundreds, a bloody conflict on the border with Sudan, and a huge corruption scandal, the capital Juba is holding a huge street party to mark the first anniversary of South Sudan’s independence.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is expected to join the leaders of neighbouring Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda at the mausoleum of South Sudan former rebel leader John Garang near the capital Juba, as the newly established nation plans to throw a huge street party.

No senior Sudanese leaders are expected to be there with the two countries still disputing some border areas and how to share their oil wealth, which some observers say the South has squandered on its military.
