Kharkiv, Group B: Holland v Germany

Germany won this the clash of the Titans, and were for most this game very comfortable against a Dutch team that just lacked the bite.

A Robin Van Persie goal put them back into the game with twenty minutes to go.

Until then, two Mario Gomez goals seemed to have meant certain defeat for the Dutch team in this the Group of Death.

The Dutch tried, but they came second and will need a win against Portugal, for Germany to defeat Denmark and then they will still need a greater goal difference to get through.

Who would have thought that the team tipped by many to be tournament favourites would have lost both their games by the second week of Euro 2012.

INDIA: From Miracle to Mirage

Financial 💷 💲 🏦, India, India and economy, poverty

If the world is to be believed, then India is finished.

Today, her external minister sought to reassure investors that things will be OK, despite grim reports about India’s economic growth rate from credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s.

There is even talk of downgrading the nation’s investment status to junk, the first of the so-called BRICs to get this treatment from Standard and Poor.

Speaking at 37th US-India Business Council in United States, external Affair Minister SM Krishna said: “India will restore investor confidence and regain economic momentum and growth.”

This, after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee “rejected” the Standard & Poor’s report.

A down grading to junk status will mean an increase in the overseas borrowing costs for Indian companies, and as a consequence diminish the country’s ability to attract foreign investment.

So, words of reassurance or defiance from her politicians will not be enough.

For too long now, corruption has plagued the state machinery and political set up.

Whilst, India could enjoy near double-digit growth from 2004 to 08, politicians could avoid the difficult questions, like where is all this money going, how it is helping to lift a country which is estimated to have a third of the world’s poor, and where according to a 2012 World Bank estimate, 47% of the total population falls below the international poverty line of US$ 1.5 a day.

Instead, those very politicians spent most of the time, arguing that growth was a miracle that would somehow take millions and millions out of poverty.

If you dared to ask how this would happen, you would be treated with silence.

Of course, India has great institutions – look at its Supreme Court, whose work against corruption is truly supreme, its IT firms which can boast some of the most creative problem solvers in the world.

But until, serious efforts are made to tackle the obvious poverty that plagues this nation of near two billion souls, all this will come to nothing.

And with slower growth, India will not be able to simply pretend the problem is not there, it will not be able to project all her problems onto her neighbour and rival, Pakistan.

Defiance, denial or reassurance are not cures.

For too long now, those who have hidden behind words such as “miracle” have simply been living in a mirage.

BREAKING NEWS

Warsaw, Group A: Poland v Russia

Poland turned the tables and all expectations in this their second Group A game against the much fancied Russians.

And after equalising the Poles looked the greater threat for the last twenty minutes of a game that will be remembered for that great goal from captain Jakub Blaszczykowski.

Russia will have learned from this experience for until the 57th minute they were well in control. Sometimes you have to accept that a game can turn on a wonderful moment and with a hostile crowd, the Russians showed great character. As for Poland, well the dream of winning this tournament is still well and truly alive, for their players have just shown they are capable of taking on one of the best teams in Europe and with a bit of luck could have even won.

Grooming is not an Asian Crime, says Leader of Rochdale Council

“This is a horrendous crime against children. In this particular case it’s a case of Asian men and white girls,” Colin Lambert, leader of Rochdale Council, told the House of Commons Home Affairs Committee today.

“Right across the country, and on a wider European scale, it’s not always men. It can be men and women. It’s not always white or non-white. It’s an issue of child sex abuse.”

Last month, nine Rochdale men was found guilty of a number of offences including rape and conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with a child, after exploiting vulnerable girls as young as 13.

Tory chairman Baroness Warsi then said that a “small minority” of Pakistani men see white girls as “fair game” whilst Jack Straw, Labour MP for Blackburn, claimed after an abuse trial in Derby last year that some men of Pakistani origin saw white girls as “easy meat”.

However, Lambert said: “If their clear statement is that the crime was committed because of the Asian community, then I strongly disagree with them, because it’s too easy to badge a crime. It happens right across all our communities. In terms of badging it as an Asian crime, that’s wrong.

“There are issues in all communities.”

Greater Manchester Police’s Chief Constable, Peter Fahy, told the MPs that, looking at sexual offences as a whole, “Asian men do not feature disproportionately”.

But he added:  “If you look at this kind of offence [grooming], on the streets, then clearly Asian men do feature disproportionately.”

There are 41 children’s homes in Rochdale, which house vulnerable children from all over England. Of the 60 children living within them, only one is from the borough.

The council’s chief executive, Jim Taylor, said social services were “now better equipped” to deal with future cases and that more than 9,000 young people in Rochdale had received awareness training to deal with threats to their safety.

Spain’s Borrowing Costs hit Record High, as Hopes fade over Bailout

Hopes that a European bailout to her banks would ease the pressure on the Spanish economy evaporated today as Madrid’s borrowing costs rose to their highest rate since the launch of the euro in 1999.

Spain’s benchmark 10-year bond yield is now at  6.81%, with Italy’s  10-year bond yield rising to 6.28%. The interest rates are seen as unsustainable in the long run for two countries weighed down by huge debts.

The Ratings agency Fitch has also downgraded the creditworthiness of 18 of Spain’s banks, after cutting its ratings on Spain’s two biggest banks, Santander and BBVA on Monday.

At least seven people have been killed after violence erupted between Buddhists and Muslims in the western Burmese state of Rakhine.

According to reports, the violence had begun on Friday in the town of Maungdaw, before spreading to state capital Sittwe and neighbouring villages.

One report has put the actual number of dead at 25 with most of the Muslim residents in the affected areas of Rakhine state being relocated.

President Thein Sein declared a state of emergency on Sunday night.

Rakhine state is named after the ethnic Rakhine Buddhist majority, but also has a sizeable Muslim population, including the Rohingyas. The Rohingyas are a Muslim group who Burma considers as illegal immigrants from Bangladesh.

This violence is reported to have been provoked by the murder of a Buddhist woman last month when a bus carrying pilgrims was attacked by Muslims.

BREAKING NEWS

Donetsk, Group D: France v England

Roy Hodgson fielded an experimental team for their opening game against one of the teams who are tipped to win the tournament and the inclusion of Alex Oxlaide-Chamberlain gave the side much-needed vitality at the front.

And for the first half hour England looked good, opening the French defence at least twice with James Milner hitting the side netting after 14th minutes. When Joleon Lescott put them in front after 30 minutes, England looked on their way. However the euphoria lasted for eight minutes as Samir Nasri creeped one past Joe Hart and the French began their comeback ending the first half looking the more assured side.

The second half was largely a messy affair. The game needed something special to bring it alive and there were moments when the French with their firepower at the front looked menacing.

However, the game was largely one of stalemate, a well organised English team with few surprises managing to deaden a French team that on paper looked like a skilful smooth team of operators.

England will take heart. As for France, well they’ll have to improve vastly if they’re going to challenge Germany, Russia, Spain or Italy in the closing stages.

BREAKING NEWS

Gdansk, Group C

Spain showed plenty of life in the first half, though the best chances went to an Italian team who for once did not sit back and allow their more fluent rivals to take over. This Spanish team are World and European champions, and anyone who thought that they may have lost the hunger to succeed or were too tired after a hectic domestic season were proved wrong, although they did not make good use of the possession that they enjoyed with the best two chances of the first half going to the Italians. That state of affairs quickly changed in the early minutes of the second with an attacking Spain getting three clear opportunities, although the mercurial Mario Balotelli failed to make the best chance of the match count when he decided to take his time after getting the better of Sergio Ramos.

Within three minutes of being replaced by Antonio Di Natalie, Italy finally put one past a Spanish team who at that moment appeared to lack bite.

Of course, we are talking about Spain here and within 3 minutes of that goal Cesc Fabregas put the European Champions back in business.

Spain continued to threaten from now onwards and with fifteen minutes to go, Fernando Torres who had just come on as a substitute failed to convert a break after being tackled by the Italian goalkeeper. Gianluigi Buffon.

Italy had another clear chance which went begging, although Spain would have felt robbed had that gone in given the amount of possession and the creativity their players enjoyed which was highlighted by a second Torres chance which was this time beautifully lofted over the bar.

If Italy figured during this time, it was because the Spanish were too busy attacking to watch their back.

At the end, the fact that they did not walk away with a win had less to do with Italy and more to do with the fact that Spain have not yet hit full gear.

Euro 2012, Germany 1 Portugal 0

BREAKING NEWS

Lviv, Group B

After a first half where Portugal were clearly content to allow their exciting opponents to attack in the hope of lofting one to Christiano Ronaldo on the break, the hope was that someone would break the deadlock in the second.

For the first fifteen minutes, Portugal showed more adventure and showed that this German team are not comfortable when they on the back foot and on the receiving end.

For along while though it appeared that this highly anticipated game between two European giants was never really going to live up to the billing, until Mario Gomez headed in a Muller cross in the seventy-second minute to put the Germans ahead and for a brief few minutes it appeared that the game had come alive.

Germany continued to press with Gomez failing to toe in another Muller cross two minutes later.

Portugal came within a whisker of scoring in the closing minutes, however they did not deserve to win this game, for they have played this style of football for too long now and it hasn’t really brought them accolades from their fans or any silverware either.

All that is of course a huge shame for the player fated as one of the best on the planet but who has still to prove himself on the international stage.

As for Germany they still excite, however their opponents will feel that they are beatable, something that seemed impossible during the World Cup when this young German side first exploded onto the scene.
