Sixteen months after the uprising in Cairo’s Tahrir Square that ousted Hosni Mubarak, Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Mursi is elected President of Egypt. He beat his rival former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq by almost a million votes.

The Higher Presidential Election Commission said Mursi had won 51.73% of the vote, to beat Shafiq,  The head of the panel of judges, Farouq Sultan, said it had upheld some of the 466 complaints by the candidates, but that the election result still stood.

Mursi, an American educated University Professor, will be President for four years in the Arab World’s most populous Muslim country. His powers as President are restricted though, after the military supended parliament where elections had awarded the Muslim Brotherhood 47 percent of votes cast.

Euro 2012, Spain are through to Semi-Finals

BREAKING NEWS

Spain 2 France 0

A nineteen minute goal and a penalty in the closing stages, both from Xabi Alonso ensured that the right team will meet Portugal in the semi final.

To their credit, France were not outplayed by this Spanish side, however, they did not test their opponents either.

Instead, this France side simply allowed the game to drift in the hope of getting an equaliser and then forcing penalties.

It was a tactic that did not work and was not worthy of a team that had been tipped by many as pre-tournament favourites.

⚽️ Euro 2012, Portugal and Germany are through to the Semis 🥅 🏟

ANALYSIS

So far, two teams have qualified for the semi finals of the 2012 European Championships. One of which will go on to become European Champions.

Last night, the world saw that team.

Germany were incredible, the goals which were struck with astonishing precision numbered four. Although their opponents Greece, like England in the last World Cup, know it could have and should have been far more.

This German side plays as a team, they are a collection of high-powered, exremely creative players, each of whom are geared towards attacking their opponent into submission. There is a contrast here with Spain who glide around the park.

The Germans simply knock the stuffing out of their opponents and it is a true spectacle. It’s time to start using the word ‘massacre’ when describing a German football performance  – the best that could be said of Greece is that like England before them, they were just there.

As for Portugal, clearly this tournament is meant to be a vehicle for Cristiano Ronaldo. He has scored in the last two games. In the semi-final game against the Czech Republic, he hit the post with a wonderful creative effort, and scored in the second half with a header.

Unfortunately for Portugal though, Ronaldo is not Maradona.

Banks, Moody's, Ratings Agency

Friday’s trading saw a rise in the share prices of banks, despite a ratings agency Moody’s downgrade of 15 global banks and financial institutions.

The Credit Ratings Agency separated the 15 banks into three groupings, relative to its assessment of their resilience to any global financial market turmoil.

It put HSBC in its strongest “first group”, together with Royal Bank of Canada and JP Morgan, saying that these banks had “stronger buffers” than many of their peers, and “generally more stable businesses”.

Barclays was in its “second group” of banks which Moody’s says face “sometimes adverse factors”. Other banks at this level are BNP Paribas and Goldman Sachs.

RBS is in the bottom “third group”, which comprises banks which “have been affected by problems in risk management, or have a history of high volatility”. Other banks in this grouping include Bank of America and Citigroup.

Moody’s global banking managing director Greg Bauer said that all of the banks affected by the downgrades had “significant exposure to the volatility and risk of outsized losses”. Moody’s added that it was putting some of the banks on a negative outlook, which is a warning that they could be downgraded again in the future. Explaining this, it said governments around the world had shown a “clear intent” to reduce their support for banks going forward.

The !5 banks that were downgraded are

UK banks  – Royal Bank of Scotland, Barclays and HSBC. Lloyds also had its rating cut by Moody’s in a separate announcement.

Others – Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, JP Morgan Chase, Credit Suisse, UBS, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole, Societe Generale, Deutsche Bank, Royal Bank of Canada, Citi Group, Bank of America.

Despite the downgrades, shares in Royal Bank of Scotland were up 1.5%, HSBC had gained 0.7% and Barclays had risen 0.9%. Lloyds was 1.6% higher.

In France, Societe Generale was up 2.5%, while in Germany, shares in Deutsche Bank had gained 0.6%.

And on Wall Street, Bank of America was up 0.9% and Citigroup rose 1.2%.

BREAKING NEWS

Egypt’s state Television has said that there will be a delay in announcing the outcome of the country’s Presidential elections.

The results of the second stage of the elections were expected on Thursday.

However, the Supreme Elections Commission said it was still reviewing complaints from the main candidates, Ahmed Shafiq, the former PM of the last President of Egypt, and Mohamed Morsi, from the Muslim Brotherhood.

And in a separate development, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has been moved from prison to an army hospital in Cairo, where he remains in a critical condition. He is said to have had a series of strokes and to be on a life support machine. Reports that he was “clinically dead” have been denied. But there has been no official statement.

BREAKING NEWS

Donetsk, Group D: England v Ukraine

Kiev, Group D: Sweden v France

Ukraine, despite all their energy and enthusiasm were unable to make it count when it mattered. This was a professional performance from an England side that were few on thrills and were lucky to score at the beginning of the second half.  Wayne Rooney who was clearly not at his best after missing the first two games following suspension put his foot at the end of a Steven Gerrard cross and after that Ukraine showed lots of energy with little to show.

England will thank the Ukraine goal keeper for allowing Rooney the chance and the assistant referee who did not see the ball cross the line at their end.

And they will also thank Sweden for beating France 2-0 and thus ensuring they will not have to play Spain in the Quarter Finals.

Instead, the team who came top of Group D will face Italy.

Pakistan Supreme Court disqualifies Prime Minister

19 Tuesday Jun 2012

Pakistan’s Supreme Court has disqualified the country’s Prime Minister from holding office.

Yousuf Raza Gilani had been convicted of contempt of court two months ago.

Now the Supreme Court ruled he had “ceased to be the prime minister of Pakistan”.

When the Supreme Court convicted Mr Gilani of failing to pursue corruption charges against President Asif Ali Zardari in April,  he was only given a token sentence and spared a jail term.

Today’s court ruling disqualifies him from office and from parliament.

“Since no appeal was filed [against the 26 April conviction]… therefore Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani stands disqualified as a member of the Majlis-e-Shoora [parliament],” Chief Justice Iftikhar Chaudhry told a packed courtroom.

He added: “He has also ceased to be the prime minister of Pakistan… the office of the prime minister stands vacant.”
