The quote from George Kennan is excellent and captures a truth about Britain and America in two world wars, the Cold War and the conflicts since. But Ali misses the point that Ukrainian nationalism like that in the Baltic states is based on how appallingly badly those countries were treated by Stalin. As were the Crimean Tatars. Of course they fought with the Germans, as did Arab nationalists in the Middle East who wanted to end British and French domination there.
